The Climate Change Authority has released its review of the potential technology transition and emissions pathways for the Australian Government to reach net zero emissions by 2050.
The review considers the pathways for six sectors – agriculture and land; built environment; electricity and energy; industry and waste; transport and resources – to decarbonise. It identifies barriers and proposes strategies and actions to address them.
PIA strongly supports the direction of this , having contributed to the work both directly and via ASBEC. We have advocated for the important role the planning profession and built environment sector plays in ensuring Australia meets its obligations to cut carbon emissions. We’re particularly pleased to see the success of our advocacy in demanding the Built Environment has its own sector plan.
PIA will work through the report and explore actions that we can implement. We’re confident planning will act as an enabler and do its bit to identify and remove any barriers to taking action. Having produced the PIA 2023 report ‘Achieving net zero emissions: an enabling role for planning’, the profession has already made significant inroads in illustrating the ways in which planning can positively contribute.
This CCA work will help us move towards net zero by 2050 in line with our national commitment, and we hope this report reinvigorates much of the work our members and the profession have achieved in this space so far.
PIA will continue to identify and advocate for planning reforms which can make a difference, such as codes for EV charging, streamlined assessment for renewables, measuring embodied carbon and planning for the circular economy. We will continue to plan for great places that are more walkable and offer transport choices.
