University of Queensland student Daniel Martiri has won the Outstanding Student Project – University Award in the Queensland-wide Planning Institute of Australia’s (PIA) 2014 Awards for Planning Excellence.

At a ceremony held in Brisbane on Friday 7 November, Daniel was honoured for his outstanding thesis project - Will the bus ever come? An equity-based assessment of transport planning and disadvantage on the Gold Coast.

PIA State President (Qld) Kate Isles said the awards judges were impressed with Daniel’s attention to detail, and the multi-disciplinary, society-wide approach of his planning project.

“Daniel Martiri has offered a level of detail and insight normally displayed by planning professionals well beyond his years,” Ms Isles said.

“Daniel’s project placed a high value on social equity in government planning policy, attempting to bring balance to the often mutually exclusive goals of economic efficiency and social equity.

“Daniel’s project was well-presented, addressed clear goals, and presented a case for simple and effective application in a real-world context.

“Daniel is a deserved winner of the Planning Institute of Australia’s Outstanding Students Project – Secondary Award. With young and upcoming researchers and planners like Daniel, the future of Queensland planning is in safe hands.”

Ms Isles said the calibre of entries in this year’s awards were very high.

“We’ve been thrilled with the quality and diversity of the entries in this year’s awards, which demonstrate just how many projects are contributing to a brighter future for Queensland,” Ms Isles said.

“Congratulations go to each individual and project team who have received an award – your projects have been recognised as being outstanding among a very strong and deep field of quality entries.”
