Emma Riley is a qualified planner with more than 20 years’ experience. She is a Fellow of the Planning Institute of Australia and a Registered Planner. She has experience working across the local and state public sector as well as in private practice.

Emma is the owner and Director of ERA Planning and Environment, a multi-disciplinary consulting firm providing services in Tasmania and Victoria. Emma started ERA in early 2012 after leading the preparation of the Southern Tasmania Regional Land Use Strategy through the Southern Tasmanian Councils Authority. In just over a decade, ERA has grown from a single person business to a highly respected, multi-skilled community of planning and environmental practitioners who are passionate about Tasmania and our place in the world. ERA’s services extend across strategic and statutory planning in the land use, development, recreation and tourism sectors, environmental assessments and approvals, and community and stakeholder engagement. As Director, Emma provides direction and oversight on all ERA commissions. These range from in-house assistance to Planning Authorities, planning applications and scheme amendments through to environmental impact assessment, strategic master plan and large scale planning policy projects.

Emma has proven experience in business management and governance and has completed qualifications with the Australian Institute of Company Directors. She has strong communication and leadership skills and enjoys problem solving, working as part of a team, and supporting employees and colleagues to achieve great outcomes. Working across both strategic and policy planning as well as statutory assessment has provided Emma with an understanding of the importance of well-designed processes and governance while remaining outcomes focussed as a strategic level. She has strong financial literacy skills developed through building a successful small business.

Emma has been actively involved with the Planning Institute of Australia across her career including serving on the Division Committee from 2003 through to 2012 and as Tasmanian Division President from 2006 to 2010. She has a strong professional reputation in Tasmania with a local media presence. She regularly presents on planning issues throughout a wide range of forums and seminars in Tasmania and is often called on to provide advice and direction to planning related matters. She was previously Executive Chair of the Tasmanian Planning Reform Taskforce and has been a member of the UTAS Planning Course Advisory Committee, the Building and Construction Industry Advisory Council and the Affordable Housing Advisory Committee.

Emma currently chairs the Board’s Finance, Audit and Risk Management Committee and has been serving as a Vice-President since November 2021.
