Victoria’s Housing Statement has set a bold target to build 800,000 homes in Victoria over the next decade. A significant proportion of this target is likely to be achieved through infill housing. Statutory planners may not have access to urban design referral advice for smaller applications and therefore play a critical role in ensuring high quality design outcomes.
This course will provide urban design tools and knowledge to assist statutory planners with the assessment of infill housing applications.
Designed for
This course is ideal for early career planners who are looking to expand their knowledge of urban design principles and their application in practice when assessing townhouse or small apartment developments. It will assist in either preparing urban design advice or better interpreting and integrating referral advice from urban designers.
Learning outcomes
Utilising warm up exercises, case studies, presentations and an ‘urban design assessment template’ that can be utilised for future planning applications, this course will focus on the following:
- Identify good urban design principles that contribute to high-quality design outcomes and more liveable neighbourhoods.
- Understand how the urban context can influence design considerations at a building scale.
- Be able to apply urban design thinking to the assessment of townhouse or small-scale apartment developments, including consideration of the public realm interface, built form massing, facade design, materials and landscaping.
