Public involvement in decision making is critical to planning practice. Planners, and particularly those interested in becoming Registered Planners, need to demonstrate understanding, awareness of and competency in engagement, in taking community concerns into account and providing feedback on how their input influenced decisions. Planners also need to understand what it takes to genuinely collaborate for decision making including to generate alternatives and identify preferred solutions.
This course aims to provide an immersion in the application of PIA and other professional association standards and frameworks as they relate to the effective integration of public perspectives into the planning processes. It explores the costs and benefits of public involvement in decision-making and explores good practice in engagement planning. Drawing on PIA, International Association for Impact Assessment (IAIA) and International Association for Public Participation (IAP2) frameworks, case studies will be used to apply skills in stakeholder and issue identification and aligning levels of community influence at different stages of decision making.
This course is tailored to the Australian planning sector, and active practitioners. Case studies are drawn from the Trainers’ experience and the experience of participants to provide maximum learning and relevance.
Designed for
Anyone involved in any aspect of community engagement, and anyone involved with decision making in some way. It is ideal for all levels of government, private practice and non-government organisations. Elected members also benefit from the training.
