This course is designed to empower planners in the realm of raster analysis, which is a complement to vector layers.
Dive deep into the world of digital terrain models, the modern substitute for contour lines, and gain expertise in land coverage interpretation, including the classification of various vegetation types. In this course, planners will learn the key aspects of water modelling for applications such as flooding, erosion, and other environmental assessments.
In an age fuelled by small satellites, drones, and advanced models, learn to unlock the full potential of GIS with raster data formats, harnessing vast datasets in elevation, land coverage, vegetation, climate change models and aerial photography currently freely available for the entire of Australia. Equip yourself with the skills to perform complex geospatial calculations, produce insightful maps, and make informed decisions.
Designed for
Strategic planners, environmental planners, transport planners and any other planner practitioner needed to develop more advanced geospatial analysis related to natural phenomenon such as elevation, hydrology and vegetation coverage.
Learning outcomes
- In this course, participants will enhance their proficiency in raster GIS, beginning with the skill to manipulate elevation datasets for terrain analysis. Through hands-on exercises, they will interpret digital terrain models, replacing traditional contour lines for modern applications.
- Participants will gain expertise in slope determination, learning to calculate and visualize slopes in various landscapes. This knowledge is pivotal for diverse applications, ranging from land management to infrastructure planning and shadow interpretation.
- Exploring the forefront of technology, attendees will delve into AI-powered satellite image analysis. They'll discover how to automatically detect and extract elements from satellite imagery, leveraging artificial intelligence within QGIS for accurate and efficient image interpretation.
- An essential aspect of the course involves integrating raster and vector data seamlessly. Participants will explore real-world scenarios where the synergy between these data types enhances decision-making processes.
- Throughout the course, emphasis will be placed on QGIS proficiency, ensuring participants can efficiently navigate and manipulate raster data. The acquired skills are transferable to other GIS software, such as ArcGIS Pro.
Prerequisites:
- Basic knowledge of QGIS, including the ability to open and transform layers, is required.
- Participants should have a fundamental understanding of GIS concepts to optimize their learning experience.
Presenter
Dr Daniel Paez, a Geomatics PhD graduate from The University of Melbourne, brings a wealth of expertise to the course. With a strong background in planning, he has made significant contributions to the field, presenting and publishing extensively on topics like digital mapping, strategic transport planning, and land-use assessments.
Dr Paez has served in policy development and planning assessment roles for local and state governments in Victoria and the Australian federal government.
Currently, he operates his private practice and serves as a strategic land use and transport planner for international organizations such as the World Bank and locally for Hume City Council and the Department of Transport and Planning in Victoria. In addition, he holds the position of Senior Industry Advisor at the University of Melbourne.
