Natalia Anderson RPIA | ACT President

Gyde Consulting

Natalia is an Urbanist and Town Planner based in Canberra, Australia. She works on a wide variety of planning consultancy matters including development applications, lease variations, DA project management, due diligence assessments and community consultations throughout Canberra, the ACT, and surrounding NSW.

She has worked in Aviation and undertaken Development Planning and Environmental Management on Federally Leased Airport Land. Natalia was the National Young Planner Director for the Planning Institute of Australia 2018-2020

and was the 2017 Planning Institute of Australia's ACT Young Planner of the Year..


Imogen Featherstone RPIA | Board Director

Imogen is currently the Development Manager (Planning) for Riverview Group, working on the Ginninderry Joint Venture Project, delivering greenfield residential dwellings to the ACT and NSW. In addition to her current role, Imogen has worked as a consultant planner working across various residential and commercial projects, with extensive experience in statutory planning, development applications, community consultation, and managing large-scale infill mixed-use developments.

In her current role, Imogen works alongside an extensive team to advocate Government policy to achieve sustainable greenfield development outcomes. She manages the project environment approvals and statutory approval process

and has recently expanded her scope to include development management, and uses her planning skills to inform her decision making.

In previous roles, Imogen has developed experience in interpreting and applying legislation, conducting lease variations in the ACT and in designated land falling under the National Capital Authority, managing projects of varying scale from DA approval to dual occupancy and Crown Lease title complexities. She has also been responsible for both working on and leading work programs as a senior team member.


Negar Yazdi PIA (Assoc.) | Vice-President & Young Emerging Planner

SMEC

Negar is a qualified Urban Planner with over six years of professional experience gained in Iran. With a background in child-friendly cities, she has been involved in drafting national guidelines and policy reports for government ministries and Tehran City Council in this area. She has experience in leading and facilitating a range of approvals including development applications, lease variations, Work Approvals, and Territory Plan variations across the ACT.

Negar has publications in this field, including a book titled “A grounded analysis on children’s cognitive development in urban settlements”. The book was published by the government as one of the only publications in this field in Iran.

In addition to her planning expertise, Negar also works as a Research Assistant within the Responsible Innovation Lab at the Australian National University to draft criteria for Responsible Urban Planning.


Thomas Carberry MPIA | Vice-President

SMEC

Thomas is a planning professional with 10 years’ experience in the delivery of a range of environmental planning and natural resource management projects. Thomas was previously based in North East Victoria where he spent 5 years as a Statutory Planner and developed an in-depth understanding of the Victorian Planning System.

In 2022, Thomas commenced work as a Senior Planner with SMEC Australia based in Canberra and has been leading and facilitating approvals for a range of

developments in the ACT and NSW, including high density residential developments, infrastructure, and strategic planning projects. Thomas is excited to be a part of the PIA ACT Division Committee and looks forward to contributing to the committee’s many causes and activities over the new few years.


Trevor Fitzpatrick MPIA (Fellow) | Immediate Past President

Trevor is a Fellow of the Planning Institute of Australia and current ACT Division President, with 35 years experience in private practice and local government planning throughout country NSW, and in the ACT.

He has worked on a vast range of projects and continually pursued innovative planning solutions to strategic projects and prepared numerous planning research reports for areas facilitating major development as well as site specific analyses.

Maxine Cooper MPIA Fellow (Retired) FEIANZ

Dr Maxine Cooper is a Fellow of the Planning Institute of Australia, as well as of the Environment Institute of Australian and New Zealand. She is also an Adjunct Professor with the University of Canberra’s Faculty of Arts and Design, independent Chair of the ACT and Region Catchment Coordination Group, independent Chair of the Landcare ACT Board, and Deputy Chair of the National Landcare Network. She has been a Fulbright Fellow (USA) and Commonwealth Scholarship holder (Canada). She is particularly interested in building partnerships to foster interdisciplinary collaborations that advance sustainable practices.

Through Maxine’s career she has held executive positions in policy and operational areas, managed diverse government businesses, and undertaken investigations and research, across multiple jurisdictions. Previously she was the Auditor-General for the Australian Capital Territory (ACT). Prior to that, she was the ACT Commissioner for Sustainability and the Environment, and before that, the Head of the ACT Water Security Taskforce. She has also held other professional senior executive positions in the ACT Government, Brisbane City Council, New South Wales Government covering disciplines ranging from auditing and integrity investigations; environmental planning; land and resource management; parks planning and management; urban and regional planning; transport planning; sustainability planning; arts policy, management and grant funding; heritage policy and planning, and government businesses (tourism, major venues, linen services, cemeteries, nurseries, bus operations).

Maxine has a PhD (Melbourne University); a Master of Environmental Design (University of Calgary, Canada); and a Bachelor of Arts - Urban & Regional Planning from the Western Australian Institute of Technology (now Curtin University).


Dot Hepburn PIA (Assoc.) | ACT Young Emerging Planner of the Year

ACT Government

Dot is a planner in the ACT Environment, Planning and Sustainable Development Directorate, having recently returned to Canberra after 6 years away.

She completed her Master of Regional and Urban Planning in 2019 at the University of South Australia, and has been active on both the SA and NSW Young Planners Committee’s since 2017.
Having a keen interest in ecologically and socially sustainable communities drove Dot’s move from primary school teaching into planning.

While a ‘new’ planner, Dot has had a range of experiences including at SA Health where she worked with allied professionals and local Council to lead work relating to Green Infrastructure and health, and at the City of Parramatta Council where she focused on Urban Heat mitigation and public health, tree canopy strategic planning and strategic land use planning.

Peter Johns MPIA

Peter Johns is a long-term resident of Canberra who has worked on transformative urban projects especially in the public and social housing field. He is passionate about cities and how they help to improve people’s lives.

Peter believes that working with people will achieve inclusive and exciting communities. After a period of retirement Peter has taken up the role of planning advisor to the ACT Greens and their planning spokesperson Ms Jo Clay MLA

Alexander Deutrom MPIA

ACT Government

Alex is a Master of Urban and Regional Planning, having completed a Bachelor of Commerce (Economics) from Charles Darwin University 2016 and his Masters degree from the University of Sydney in 2018.Alex started his planning career as planner with the Northern Territory Government (NTG) in 2017 where he worked on projects across the Darwin, Palmerston, Litchfield and Katherine regions.In 2020 Alex joined the private sector where he has worked on a number of large projects including the Charles Darwin University City Campus, the design and approval of Kilgariff Estate, and the Civic and State Square Art Gallery.

In 2020 Alex also became the President of the PIA NT Division. In 2023 Alex moved to Canberra taking a position with the Planning and Urban Policy team in the ACT Government.

Mel is a Director at GYDE Consulting, a leading consultancy in the fields of statutory and strategic planning and data analytics. Over the past 12 years, she has emerged as a dynamic planner, who consistently strives to achieve positive and innovative outcomes for government and private Clients.

Whilst she carries a broad spectrum of both statutory and strategic planning knowledge across a very diverse range of project types and scales, she is a statutory planner at heart with a particular interest in larger scale, more complex

development proposals. Mel thrives on navigating her clients through the complexity of our planning systems, project managing the approvals process and has a keen attention for detail.

Hope has more than 15 years experience in environmental assessment, consulting and planning, with a broad range of experience in urban and infrastructure planning, environmental impact assessment and environmental planning projects across Australia. She enjoys thinking strategically about planning and development matters, and providing sustainable solutions to planning and environmental challenges for my clients.

Hope's experience has included the management of multi-disciplinary environmental impact assessment and planning projects. She has provided services to clients from a range of industry sectors including transport, power,

mining, property development and waste and for both the government and private sector.


Ian Wood-Bradley MPIA

Ian is a recognised leader in town planning and urban design who is passionate about city transformation and delivering vibrant, connected, inclusive, resilient and healthy urban places for people.

Ian has held senior executive positions in both the public and private sector and has over 30 years professional experience leading large and complex urban transformation programs in Canberra and internationally that leverage government land, transport infrastructure and investment in the public domain. Ian is currently advising the ACT

Suburban Land Agency and EPSDD on range of urban development projects and urban policy.


Richard Nash MPIA

Richard was appointed Managing Director of Purdon Planning after several years as General Manager and Senior Urban Planner prior to that. With his technical experience and leadership guidance, Richard leads a team of dedicated and passionate professionals to deliver a variety of projects and engage with the broader Canberra community and surrounding region.

Richard has over 15 years’ experience in urban and strategic planning with both the National Capital Authority and

Purdon Planning. With a keen focus on strategic planning, Civil, Master Planning and redevelopment projects he also manages a wide variety of planning and community engagement projects assisting the development of the nation’s capital.
